Understanding Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage Plans
Medicare choices can be confusing. One of the main things to know is the difference between Original Medicare paired with a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) and Medicare Advantage plans. Many who have a Medicare Advantage plan mistakenly believe it’s a Supplement to Medicare. In reality, Medicare Advantage is not the same as getting a Medicare Supplement to fill the gaps in Original Medicare. I think much of the confusion comes from the fact that both plans use the term ‘Medicare.’ If the names were different, it would be easier to understand. Learn more

More info about Medicare
Original Medicare (Part A & B) is your primary coverage. You have the option to purchase a Medicare Supplement (or ‘Medigap’) to cover the gaps. When you have a Medicare Supplement, your doctor or hospital bills Medicare first, then the rest goes to your supplement provider. What’s key here is that the specific company doesn’t matter—what matters is that your provider accepts Original Medicare. Once Medicare pays, your Medigap plan will automatically cover its share through an electronic system used by all supplement carriers. So, you don’t need to worry about whether your provider accepts your specific Medigap company. Each plan, like F, G, or N, provides the same benefits regardless of the carrier. The only difference is the premium, which can vary widely. That’s why we work with a variety of Medicare Supplement carriers to offer competitive options, as all Medigap rates increase over time.
Secondly, if you have Original Medicare with a Medigap/Supplement plan, keep in mind that you’ll need to buy a separate Part D plan for prescription drug coverage, which comes with its own premium. We offer several stand-alone Part D options to pair with your Medigap plan. As a courtesy, we also provide a free annual drug plan search for our Medigap clients. If the best Part D plan for you is one we sell, we’ll handle the enrollment for you. If it’s a plan we don’t offer, we can tell you which company to contact, or we can enroll you ourselves, but we won’t be the agent-of-record, meaning we won’t be able to assist with any issues that might come up.
Then, finally, with Medicare Advantage (also known as Medicare Part C), Original Medicare is no longer your primary coverage. Instead, you’ve chosen a private company to manage all of your Medicare benefits, often with specific co-pays. Unlike Original Medicare, these private plans can offer extra benefits that Medicare doesn’t typically provide such as: vision, dental, hearing aids, OTC vitamins, medical items (like bandaids, aspirin, medicated creams, some types of equipment, etc.), post-hospital meals for a limited time, emergency response systems, and prescription drug coverage. Most Medicare Advantage plans are $0 Premium plus the cost of Medicare Part B deducted from your Social Security payment.
